Blogs And Rss Feeds

Posted by Bud Wiser on November 21st, 2005

Blogs and RSS feeds are a sure-fire way to get your website off the dirt roads of cyberspace and onto the Internet superhighway! Think about it. Has your web traffic been slow and bumpy? Then maybe it’s time to try a new route. Let’s imagine for a minute the local department store you shop in. What would you think if the displays never changed? Every time you entered you saw the same signs advertising the same products. Boring, right? After a while you wouldn’t even pay attention to them. Websites are no different. RSS feeds and blogs are interesting ways to spruce them up a bit - to keep things interesting and changing. Believe me, interest is a key element in drawing people back time and time again.

Blogger’s Fight Against Splogs

Posted by Bud Wiser on November 11th, 2005

Blogger has recently started disabling auto posting to their accounts that they feel might be splogs. If your blog has any signs it may be a splog, Blogger implements a Word Verification filter before you can send or edit post. If you feel your blog was unfairly filtered out as a possible splog you have the option to request a manual review of your blog to remove word verification. What the word verifation filter does is stops auto posting to blogs. In order to complete a post, that is send it, a human needs to match a graphic code. Here is what it looks like.

This puts a stop to programs that can make auto posts to mutliple blogs on a schedule. I am not sure what Blogger looks for to flag blogs as possible blogs, the content is probably not a factor. I imagine the number of posts made in a given time. For example if your blog has 1200 posts and is only a couple of months old, this would be a flag. There probably are other considerations as well, but I believe the number of posts and frequency is the main factors.

Here is what Blogger has to say if you click on the ?

“Blogger’s spam-prevention robots have detected that your blog has characteristics of a spam blog. (What’s a spam blog?) Since you’re an actual person reading this, your blog is probably not a spam blog. Automated spam detection is inherently fuzzy, and we sincerely apologize for this false positive.

Some possible causes would be, irrelevant, repetitive, or nonsensical text, along with a large number of links, usually all pointing to a single site. Before we can turn off mandatory word verification on your posts we’ll need to have a human review your blog and verify that it is not a spam blog. Please fill out the form below to get a review.

Find out more about how Blogger is fighting spam blogs.”

I also suspect that the nuumber of posts and frequency counts.

Certainly this is not good news to spammers who use blogger blogs to promote adsense, or affiliates, or use them for blog and ping to get new sites indexed faster, but at least they are not deleting the accounts, at least for now. This means that you can still get traffic from them and make manual posts. You should set up new blogs to take their places as soon as possible, linking to them from your flagged blogs. On your new blogs keep in mind that Blogger is watching the number of posts being made and the frequency of posts. You will not want to send more then a few posts a day. I do not now what the acceptable number is. Also make your posts look more natrual, and relevant. Add manual posts in between automated posts.

As always Google in it’s attempt to fight spam only a new door for spam. As if there were not enough splogs out there already, now there will be even more! In order to go around this new filter, spammers will now have to create even more blogs to make up for the limited number of posts they can send to their blogs!

Wordpress WordPress is a better alternative to blogger any way, and spammers know that too, and also use wordpress. However blogger’s ease of set up makes it to tempting to pass up, and I doubt very much this will have much impact on spamming with blogger blogs. About the only thing blogger could do to really put an end it or at least cut it down is limit the number of posts to 2 a day, and if they did that they would loose a lot of bloggers not just spammers!

UPDATED : 11/12/05

Well after further investigation I discovered one of the main filters to be for duplicate content! If you are running a auto blogging program like rss to blog, and are using search results and or news stories, repeated posts is a no no! About 20 of my blogs have been filtered and now have the word verification added!

Interesting to note that my only 2 blogger blogs which are hosted on my server, were not filtered despite the fact they had repeated posts and high number of posts. So it appears that if you host the blog on your server you won’t get the word verification added!

A New Bad Trick To Get Higher Google Rankings

Posted by Bud Wiser on November 5th, 2005

SEO Traffic Rank

Some have discovered a new trick to get inbound links from authority web sites. At the moment, it seems to be possible to improve your scripts that are used by some company web sites and . Webmasters can force other web sites to link to them if they use the correct code in a link to the search feature of the other web site:

  • A webmaster links directly to a search request page on a reputable web site.

  • The link code contains information that causes the search script on the reputable web site to include a link to the web site of the webmaster.
  • When search engine spiders (including Google’s spider) index the linked search results page, they find a link from an authority web site to the webmaster’s site.
  • As a high authority web site links to the web site of the webmaster, his web site gets higher rankings on Google.

For example, this link seo SEO purposes on some web sites that use search/bymodelnumber? in the URL for search queries.

In addition, the link also adds a <H1> tag with the important keyword on the page and it also adds the keyword to the title.

Note: We have removed the original URL of the web site with which you can do this trick in the example link so that the site doesn’t get abused.

Is this the fast track to high Google rankings?

We strongly recommend not to use this trick. You might get short term results with this technique if you find enough web sites that can be exploited that way.

However, search engines don’t like to be tricked. As soon as search engines find out that you tried to trick them, it is very likely that your web site will be banned from the index.

Hello world!

Posted by Bud Wiser on December 31st, 1969

Welcome to Internet Opportunites. If you have visited Internet Opportunities recently you are probably wondering what happened to our site. I decided to switch my site over to a blog. I feel blogs are the best way to go for marketing and information. I want to share 3 very good wordpress WordPress plugins I came across which I am using on this blog. I highly recommend them!

The first is called a follow plugin. Wordpress 1.5 comes equiped with a nofollow tag that it places on all comments and trackbacks. The no follow tag stops search engines from following any links posted in comments. The purpose is to discourage comment spam since the nofollow kills any PR benefits. Many bloggers feel the nofollow tag is a bad idea, and I agree. It may discourage some from posting real comments and contributing. It takes away from the blogging experience. This is why the follow plug in was made. It strips wordpress of all it’s nofollow tags!

The second is called bot-check. This is a better solution to fight comment spam then the stupid nofollow tag that penalizines everyone. The bot-check stops all automated blog spamming programs from posting spam because it requires a human to match the correct code before posting a comment. This is a better solution as it only penalizes spammers!

Of course there is no perfect solution, I happen to know there are programs available that can stop at blogs with bot-checks and wait for the spammer to manually match the code, and of course you can still spam manually too. But wordpress sends me an email when ever a comment is posted, I can imediately review, and delete the comment right from my email if I see it’s spam.

The third one is a cool plugin which your going to love! It’s called Adsense Deluxe, and this baby rocks! It is hands down the best adsense plug in there is! Highly configurable with multiple ad blocks. You just enter a simply code any where you want in your posts where you want adsense to appear. It has it’s own section in your control panel under Options! This one is definitely a must have!

Well that’s it for now!
